About Archives West Midlands
The West Midlands is home to a remarkable legacy of documentary heritage which captures the life of the people of the West Midlands over the last millennium. Aspects such as everyday living, government, business, sport, leisure, education, and religion are recorded in millions of contemporaneous documents including medieval parchment, written documents, plans, maps, photographs, film and digital records. In turn this documentary heritage is used ...
Shropshire pins historic photographs to an online map
At our recent Friends’ Event we were very fortunate to hear about some of the wonderful projects undertaken by the various Friends of Archives groups across the region. One such project was a wonderful mapping project being completed in Shropshire. The project is linking historic photographs in Shropshire Archives collection to an online map. This clever use of metadata allows people to search for information and is not dependent on a place name ...

Sharing our success: collaborating on digital preservation
We’re very proud of the fact that we’ve made a great start to finding a collaborative solution to support individual services with digital preservation. The work we have completed has attracted the attention of the wider archive sector beyond the West Midlands and we have been asked to share our findings. The report in the attachment gives an overview of the varying levels of readiness and engagement with digital preservation across the region. O...
Worcestershire Diocesan Wills Conservation Project
Another project we were fortunate to hear about was the fabulous Worcestershire Diocesan Wills Conservation Project. This project will see the conservation and digitisation of 162,795 wills and 12,504 related documents. This will not only ensure the survival of these valuable and irreplaceable records but help people to access them more easily. The successful completion of the project will save these hugely informative and fascinating records for...
Staffordshire Archives and Heritage Volunteers Learning Room
Prior to the lockdown being implemented we had suspended all our volunteering projects. The Service has in excess of 100 volunteers working with us and the challenge was to stay in touch with our volunteers and to support them where we could. Initially we had hoped to begin a programme of sending out scans and photocopies of documents for our volunteers to work on, but by 24th March we had to close the Service and the buildings to staff as well. ...

"Thy Life is a Miracle": Celebrating Shakespeare’s Birthday in Testing Times
The COVID-19 crisis has curtailed plans to celebrate Shakespeare’s Birthday in the usual manner. The traditional parade through Stratford-upon-Avon and the associated civic and cultural events have been abandoned in the interests of public health. However, a massive social media campaign is planned for 23rd April 2020 – #SaluteToStratford. Undertaken by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and partners, including Archives West Midlands, this will cel...
Warwickshire Bytes – A Local Project with Global Reach
People around the world have been helping to index a huge collection of county Quarter Sessions Depositions as part of the Warwickshire Bytes project, with the enterprise proving so successful that Warwickshire County Record Office is now working to incorporate these remote volunteers into their core service. More than 80 people signed up to the project during 2019, using digitised images and documents shared via the Cloud to transcribe informati...
